Family Ties
is an American sitcom
that aired on NBC from September 22, 1982 until May 14, 1989. The series, from
creator Gary David Goldberg, reflected the move in the United States from the
cultural liberalism of the 1960s and 1970s to the conservatism of the 1980s. This was particularly expressed through the relationship between young
Republican Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox) and his ex-hippie parents, Elyse and
Steven Keaton (Meredith Baxter-Birney and Michael Gross).
The show won multiple awards, including three consecutive Emmy Awards
for Michael J. Fox as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

The show received positive reviews throughout most of its run, becoming
one of the most popular sitcoms of the mid-to-late-1980s. The series was
nominated for more than forty awards, including ten Primetime Emmy Award and
five Golden Globe Award nominations, winning each one. Also very successful in
the ratings, Who's the Boss? consistently ranked in the top ten in the final
primetime ratings between the years of 1985 and 1989, and has since continued
in syndication worldwide.

The show is set in the Cheers bar (named for the toast "Cheers") in Boston, Massachusetts, where a group of locals meet to drink, relax, chat and have fun. The show's theme song, written and performed by Gary Portnoy, and co-written with Judy Hart Angelo, lent its famous refrain, "Where Everybody Knows Your Name", as the show's tagline.
